Dr. Gerard O’Connor, is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with a subspecialty interest a & expertise in sports injuries and trauma. He completed his undergraduate medical degree in UCC and graduated with honours in 2003 (MB, BCh, BAO, BSc) and progressed to post-graduate training in Surgery (IMRCS), Emergency Medicine (MRCEM, FRCEM) , and Sports Medicine (MMed, FFSEM). During his training he worked in busy, high volume centres with throughput both in terms of major trauma and sports injuries. He currently works as a Consultant in the Mater Hospital Dublin, the Trauma Clinic, Smithfield Rapid Injuries Unit, and the Mater Private Hospital Dublin. In this practice, he continues to see a diversity of both trauma and sports related injuries.

Additionally he has been appointed as Match Day Doctor by the IRFU for International Senior Men’s, International Senior Women’s, the Women’s Rugby World Cup, the European Champions Cup, the Pro 12 and Pro 14 and various underage international Irish rugby matches.

Additional Sports Medicine experience includes a period as Cork senior football team doctor (2006) and experience in rallying, boxing, and mixed martial arts events. In his hospital career he has been exposed to the full range of sporting injuries including hurling injuries (Cork & Kilkenny), GAA and rugby injuries (through the proximity of Croke Park to the Mater Hospital). These injuries have involved both elite and amateur players.

His neurotrauma experience comprises assessment, operative and critical care aspects across two neurosurgical house posts and as a Senior Emergency Physician in five model-four hospitals that receive acute unselected and transferred neurosurgical cases. He also developed head injury and concussion guidelines for a large Model 4 hospital Emergency Department. He also has significant experience in ultrasound and simulation medicine and holds appointments as a Regional Ultrasound Trainer and National Simulation Trainer at the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training in RCSI.
In addition to his extensive clinical experience, Dr. O’Connor has been a lead author and co-author on a number of peer reviewed publications across the diverse fields of his expertise.
